Ultima I - Day 1

Here it is in all its glory. Ultima I. Richard Garriot’s first real adventure.
I was really expecting this game to be pretty crap. Reason being its now more than 25 years old. I do admit it took me a while to work out how to stop dying all the time. Once you get the hang of things it is quiet addictive.
I entered into the world of Ultima at Ultima VI. I can’t remember why I never did play this? I remember my brother playing the Wizardry series and I tackled those but never the earlier Ultimas.
I’ve included the Apple IIgs title screen. I stumbled upon this after finishing Ulima I. The graphics are much better and it has midi sound.

Playing the Ultima games in reverse seems a little different. The controls are kind of strange compared to Ultima VII and above. I start off in the Lands of Lord British and begin to explore. The first quest Lord British gives you is to seek the grave of the lost souls.
A very easy quest but you need at least a ralf to get there as you need to travel over sea.
Exploring a little to the north and I enter the castle of the lost king. Here the king wants me to kill a gelatinous cube and return to him. This provides to be quiet challenging as my character is pretty weak. I spend some time in the dungeons and try and get my stats up to scratch. Takes me about 2 hours to get a good character. I head down to levels 3 and 4 of the dungeons and kills the gelatinous cube.
After doing a lot of dungeon work and building my character up I decided to head off to find the “sign posts” to increase my stats to maximum. The best way to do this is to get enough gold and buy an air car. Pretty cool. Can travel over water and land but gets bogged in the forrest. haha
Now my character is kicking arse. All my stats are maxed out to 99 except strength. I have a blaster and a set of reflective amour.
